2006-2007 Flemington Rotary Highlights (pdf)

Hundreds proclaim: Souper Douper!

Mark up another Flemington Rotary success! Our first annual Hunterdon County Soup Cook-Off drew 154 tasters, 47 chefs, dozens of helpers and wide praise all around! Like the driving rain itself, tasters poured in from across the county to sample a glorious variety of soups, from seafood, to vegetable, to meat and potatoes. There was something for everyone and plenty to go around.

Our top prize was split between high schooler Treacey Everitt of Ringoes, who made a potato dill soup, and Claudia Kennington from Raritan Township, who made a creamy crab soup. They divided the $250 gift card donated by Commerce Bank of Flemington.

Second prize went to Glenn Tutko of Flemington. For his delicious lobster bisque, he won a $100 gift certificate to Grand Colonial Restaurant in Hampton.

Third prize went to Barbara Merlini of Whitehouse Station, who made a bacon and cheese baked potato soup. She won the $50 gift certificate from Lo-Fatt-Chow in Ringoes. A wrap-up article with photos and winner recipes will appear in the Mar. 29 edition of the Hunterdon Observer. Reporter Emily Colo spent two hours on site, tasting soups, interviewing chefs and tasters and snapping photos.

Kudos to the Soup Cook-Off Committee for initiating a great new club event. The cook-off was conceived by PR Committee Chair Lisa Brady and member Robin Patric, and carried out with the dedicated help of committee members extraordinaire Kim Metz and Bob Burgard.

Special thanks to Polytech for hosting and staffing the event. Four delicious salads, plump rolls and a lovely selection of desserts were provided by Polytech students to accompany the soups.

Now that we know it’s a community success, all future soup cook-offs will be held on annual Rotary Day, Feb. 23, as our club’s tribute to this great organization.
Thanks to all who came out and joined in the fun!
